The final match of Varsity and it was a mad one; the chants could be heard from miles away. UKC beat CCCU easily. As soon as they scored their first penalty, they were off and raring to go.
Varsity’s Memories
InQuire’s Sports Website Editor Meg Warwick likely attended more Varsity games than anybody else in Canterbury—nearly every one over the week. Here were her highlights:
Women’s Basketball – One of the most amazing matches to have taken place in the entire tournament. Although Kent lost, it was intense and unbearably close until the last few seconds. UKC were neck and neck with CCCU until the home side were given a penalty shot that they scored to win it by a single point in the last 10 seconds: 53-52.
Double Victory – Wins come in twos and that was the case for UKC. Volleyball double win, badminton double win, and lacrosse double win. All incredible games
Men’s Rugby 1s – The last game of Varsity saw an intense competition, to say the least. The score was 3-3 for a while with UKC finally pipping CCCU to the post when they finally scored a penalty shot.
Netball 4s – I was not expecting to enjoy a netball match so much, but the 4s were unbeatable. With incredible team chemistry and great shooting skills, UKC beat CCCU by over twenty shots.
Maniac Monday – An amazing day for UKC with 9 wins out of 10. Hockey got their clean sweep in ten years.
Penalties – Football couldn’t get enough of penalties, with three out of four of their matches putting huge pressure on the goalies. Two out of three times, UKC proved that penalties do not scare them in the slightest.
