Women's Rugby: An unfortunate defeat

Canterbury Christ Church scored eight tries in a convincing win beating the University of Kent 52-8 in a thrilling Varsity Women’s Rugby Match played at Canterbury Rugby Football Club’s ground.

This match was destined to be one sided from the very off, with CCCU two BUCS leagues above Kent.

Christ Church (burgundy and turquoise) shut Kent (red and navy) out for most of the game, thanks to a dominant forward pack that had a strong showing in both the scrum and the breakdown of the rucks.

An end-to-end opening saw the two sides exchange early penalties and build up play slowly, but CCCU made the breakthrough midway through the first half with the game’s opening try. A heroic last ditch tackle a Kent back was unable to stop the Christ Church pack from ploughing their way past the line.

UKC’s resilience showed as they hit back with a try of their own – following good work from the forwards, and a superb run from scrum-half Ampontuah. Yet, this only proved to be a consolation as CCCU dominated for the remainder of the encounter.

Kent were able to come close on several occasions to go in front but lacked creativity and player support in the final 3rd.

The deficit was extended to 30-5 by CCCU just before half time as Kent showed greater fertility in their defence.

As the second half kicked off, CCCU came flying with an early try that set precedent for the remaining 40 minutes. Although the kicking game was poor from both sides, CCCU were able to squeeze their conversion through the post.

Four final CCCU tries rubbed salt into the wounds for Kent a side that showed real spirt for the entire 80 minutes of play, but the Kent players claimed that they had not lost the game and that “they have done themselves proud”.
