UKC Korfball Break New Ground at the BUCS National Championship

Over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd March, the UKC Korfball 1 st team travelled to Norwich to pit their wits against the nation’s best in the BUCS National Championship. The team, which is one of very few sports to allow both men and women to compete in the same team, may not be the most high profile of Kent’s sports teams, but they certainly made waves within their sport as they finished 4th overall.

The first day started off in terrific fashion as Kent dispatched with Oxford, Exeter, and Edinburgh to finish top of their group. As the day kept going, the wins kept rolling in, as Sheffield Hallam fell 11-5 to Kent in the Quarter-finals to ensure that Kent won all four of their games on the opening day. This victory confirmed that Kent would finish in the top four in the country, their best ever finish.

On day two, Kent were finally defeated by eventual champions, Sheffield. In the bronze medal match that followed, Kent went very close but fell to a last-minute winner at the hands of Nottingham. Despite the heartbreak of the final day, Kent had a fantastic tournament and now rank among the best teams in the nation, something to be immensely proud of.

Special mention has to go to Kent’s Dani Lang, who scored 30 times to be named as the top male goal scorer of the entire competition, an unbelievable achievement. Beyond individual prowess, the entire UKC squad did themselves proud, not just in the national championships but throughout the entire season, showing great dedication, determination, and by displaying fantastic teamwork to keep spirits high even in the more trying times.

The whole team would like to express their gratitude to their coaches, Steve and Ryan, for helping them through the whole weekend and driving them on to this success. As well as the coaches, the team captain, Andrew, was an inspiration and played a pivotal role with his constant motivation for the team to keep them hungry for more success.

To anyone who came to Norwich to offer their support, or who followed the games from afar over the team’s public page or in the livestream, their support was much appreciated and felt by all the players as they gave their best in bringing home this unprecedented success.
