Meghan Markle hasn’t had a break from the spotlight since the start of her royal journey. The UK press followed her every move, heavily reporting on her controversial family issues and her decisions to stray away from long-held royal traditions. Recently, Meghan has commented that she did not expect the amount of unfair negative coverage from the British press. The press is known for invading people’s personal lives, but we as the British public need to realize that Meghan is only human, and perfection is impossible.
Following her recent documentary ‘Harry and Meghan: An African Journey’, Meghan has admitted that her “British friends said to me: ‘I’m sure he’s great. But you shouldn’t do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life”. Meghan Markle is an American actress, so is familiar with the American press, but being part of the royal family has resulted in the British tabloids continuously reporting on her personal life.
It is fair to say that Meghan was unaware of the impact that the press would have on her mental health as she had never experienced this type of coverage before. In order to cope with the stories, Meghan commented that she adopted “a stiff upper lip” approach. But this can be a very toxic way to deal with these pressures. Meghan and Harry should be able to deny the lies written about them without fear of backlash from the press and the public. The couple have begun to take legal action against those newspapers who have unlawfully published material and over illegal phone hacking. Harry doesn’t want to see his wife’s life destroyed by all the negative false press. His mum was also a victim of the British press and he doesn’t want to see his wife go down the same path.
The couple are advocates for mental health, something they have first-hand experience of. Many people have criticised the couple for being so open about this, but why should they keep it a secret? Movements are going on across the country prompting people to talk about their mental health, so Harry and Meghan should be encouraged to speak out. We need to listen to those advocating these issues as according to the charity mind, 1 in 4 people in the UK experience mental health problems each year; we need to keep the discussion going. The whole concept of adopting a stiff upper lip needs to change, Meghan and Harry are trying to make a difference. We need to show our support for their cause.
The British public needs to be reminded that the royal family are just like ordinary people, the continuous negative press would trouble anybody. Meghan and Harry should be commended for their strength. Meghan is trying her best to juggle motherhood and her advocacy work. Her mental health work is incredibly important, and we should be encouraging others to follow in her footsteps, instead of adopting the typical British attitude of just brushing these topics under the carpet. Meghan needs to be applauded for speaking the truth.
