Men's Cricket 1s say CCCU later

That was the caption on UKC Men’s Cricket 1s as they celebrate a victory against CCCU in their Varsity match. The 1s were able to pull off a 22 run win, beating Christ Church in Varsity for the first time in 2 years.

Kent opened the batting with Captain Tom Wroot and James Duckett staged on to get to 45 for no loss after 6 overs. Then during the 7th over Canterbury attempted a run out, appealing hugely to the umpire but it wasn’t given. Chants of “same old Christ Church, always cheating” quickly followed. On the next ball the circumstances repeated themselves but this time it was given with Duckett leaving the field.

Kent would lose another couple of wickets with Matt Scammell run out and Lewis White caught putting Kent on 66 for 3 at the end of the tenth over. Then the batsmen turned it up putting in a Ben Stokes like performance and started hitting sixes left right and center putting up 30 runs in just 2 overs. This left Canterbury to chase a respectable 96 for 3 after 12 overs.

The second innings began poorly for Canterbury Christ Church and may have been a sign of things to come with a dot ball. Christ Church then batted well, slowly ticking up the run count and making Kent nervous getting to 43 for no loss after 6 overs. However, Christ Church started to collapse during the 7th over with a ball caught to give Kent its first wicket. The scoring then stopped, and wickets came quickly with Euan Munday catching one down the right side on 50 after 7 overs, then Scammell following suit on 58 after 9 overs. 2 more wickets would fall after a run out and a stumping giving Christ Church a final run count of 74 for 5.

What can’t be understated in this game was the fanatical support of the crowd which helped propel Kent to an overall 2-1 victory over all 3 games played. Their relentless chanting got under the skin of their opponents and gave the away side the energy of a home game. For that reason alone, Cricket is a must watch at Varsity.
