During the middle of October, the Canterbury theatre scene could talk about one thing only; Jamie was coming to the Marlowe Theatre! This upbeat musical, with a wonderful message about a young boy finding his true identity, is incredibly uplifting. If you get the chance to take in this performance, I implore you to. The catchy songs and amazing musical numbers will make you want to get up on your feet and join the cast in their wonderful choreography.

Even before the musical began, the stage setting caught my attention. I really enjoyed the band placement. Sitting up high behind the action, they were slightly hidden by the backdrop. Throughout the show, the slick set changes, the lights, and the alterations of the backdrop worked incredibly well and highly suited the performance. Pairing this with the easy costume changes, gave a sense of glamour to the performance, especially the scenes with the older Drag Queens.

To my amazement, the cast that piled onto the stage as the performance started was the main touring cast! With Layton Williams at the helm, the wealth of talent in this play was incredible. It was great to see Williams, one of my favourite actors from Bad Education, give it his all and really bring the character of Jamie to life. Facing the struggles to find himself and to achieve his goal of becoming a Drag Queen, he also tries to cope with the bullies at his school and the overwhelming feelings of abandonment, due to his Dad’s wanting to have very little to do with him.

Amy Ellen Richardson’s portrayal of Margret was also amazing to watch! With her musical solo of ‘He’s my Boy’, her vocal range was really tested, providing an amazing emotional portrayal of a mother wanting the best for her son. Richardson’s portrayal of Margaret was so lovely to watch. With her supportive and loving nature, she is the mum anyone would want.

However, my favourite actor by far had to be Shane Richie, bringing to life the characters of Hugo and Loco-Chanelle. I was highly impressed with how he threw himself into the role, completely transforming from the EastEnders actor we know and love!

Throughout the auditorium, there was a major buzz, even in the interval you could feel the excitement swell. The only critique I had of the entire experience would be to the woman sitting behind me, who did not stop talking throughout the performance! After she piped down a little, I felt completely involved in the show.

Even if they have now left Canterbury to continue with their tour, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is honestly a musical I would recommend to everyone! The uplifting storyline brings very important issues to life, whilst promoting inclusivity. It truly was a great performance.
